These charts from The Economist show two trends: the accelerated growth in the use of AI in scientific research and the increase in academic publications.
<text><p><strong>But the change could be much more profound</strong>. </p><p>AI is beginning to solve mathematical problems that had remained open for decades, raising a fascinating question: what happens when machines can discover things that humans themselves struggle to comprehend? </p><p>At the same time, producing research is becoming easier and easier, but that does not guarantee its quality. </p><p>We could be entering a stage in which our ability to generate scientific results advances faster than our ability to understand and verify them. </p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0020</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-11-02T07:23:19.269078+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>science</tag><tag>ai</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-11-02T07:23:20.410604+00:00</created_at></media_item><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-11-02T07:23:20.448255+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name>Trita Parsi</handler_name><external_id />
Trita Parsi (Quincy Institute): Ships transiting Strait of Hormuz facing ‘massive cost and a huge risk’. “I don’t think the Iranians are on the verge of surrendering, capitulating in any way,” said Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. “So we could end up with an escalation prior to the midterms. I think that’s a real possibility.”
Iran may decide “to make Trump pay for declining the proposal and the increased economic pressure the country is under”, he told Al Jazeera.
“They may decide that this is the time to escalate … just as the midterms are approaching.”
Iran’s Hormuz proposal could be seen as “kind of throwing a bone to Trump” as a potential way to get oil and gas prices down ahead of the November vote, Elmasry added.
The Republican Party is not doing well in the polls, with a number of candidates “distancing themselves” from Trump, he noted.
It’s not just the Iranians under severe economic pressure because of the US naval blockade and ongoing sanctions, “it’s also the Trump administration”, said Elmasry.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-27T09:11:58.290983+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Despite flurry of New York diplomacy, US-Iran deal remains elusive
<text>Analysts say a deal this week is unlikely – core disagreements between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-24T05:28:43.960937+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>diplomacy</tag><tag>us-iran</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrives for the 81st United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on September 22, 2026. With strategically important islands and large stretches of Yemen’s Red Sea coast now under Houthi control, the group has tightened its grip on the Bab al-Mandeb strait – a crucial chokepoint for global shipping and energy supplies. During the talks, the Houthis assured US officials that they had no intention of attacking US shipping in the Red Sea, saying their restrictions would apply only to vessels linked to Saudi Arabia. But that would still leave two of the world’s most important shipping routes facing serious disruption, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz restricted for the past six months. Any further disruption could drive global oil and consumer prices even higher, creating another political headache for US President Donald Trump before midterm elections in November.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-18T16:01:33.361523+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>shipping</tag><tag>houthis</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-18T16:01:33.887617+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
WATCH: Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea oil pipeline knocked out by drone strikes
<text>Saudi Arabia says a vital pipeline carrying oil from its eastern fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu has been temporarily shut down after being struck by several drones launched from Iraq, causing injuries and damage. Abdulaziz Alghashian of the Gulf International Forum says Saudi Arabia is likely to pursue a multilateral response, potentially involving partners such as Turkiye and Pakistan, as it weighs how far regional and international allies are willing to go. Ben Cahill of the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Centre says losing the pipeline is a serious blow to Saudi Arabia’s ability to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, warning that oil prices are likely to rise further if Red Sea access remains under threat.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-12T07:00:30.795861+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>drone-strikes</tag><tag>oil</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-12T07:00:31.071033+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Iran-Oman talks on Strait of Hormuz do not mean reopening
<text>Ongoing talks between Iran and Oman over managing the Strait of Hormuz should not be read as a sign Tehran intends to reopen it, according to Mokhtar Haddad, editor-in-chief of the Iranian newspaper Al-Wefaq. “Iran and the Sultanate of Oman have been pursuing this matter for some time. But that does not mean Iran will open the Strait of Hormuz,” Haddad told Al Jazeera. He said Tehran has kept the two issues separate. “Iran has always stressed that this track is separate from the issue of reopening the Strait,” Haddad said, describing a process beginning with “an interim agreement, after which a final agreement would be announced.” He suggest that any such deal would not extend to reopening shipping. “Does that mean reopening the Strait of Hormuz? No, certainly not,” he said, adding that “Iranian officials have confirmed this.” Haddad said Iran’s position would hold “unless the US accepts the Iranian conditions contained in the memorandum of understanding,” saying that Washington “must return to implementing the memorandum of understanding” for the Strait’s status to change.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-08-26T04:21:45.239005+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>oman</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Analysis</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-08-26T04:21:45.528362+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>
