And the cost of insuring Oracle’s debt against default is at its HIGHEST level since 2009.

But that's not all...

Oracle raised a $38 BILLION construction loan for data centers in Texas and Wisconsin. Six months later, about $1 BILLION of that debt was still unsold. So the original lenders are now selling parts of it at a DISCOUNT... Taking a loss just to get out.

And it’s not just them.

JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley are also moving AI-related loans OFF their balance sheets... Because both are approaching the limits of how much AI financing they’re willing to hold.
</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-18T17:07:44.312871+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>us</tag><tag>ai</tag><tag>data-centers</tag><tag>economy</tag><tag>debt</tag><tag>oracle</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type>IMAGE</media_type><file>/media/content/3011/image.png</file><file_name>image.png</file_name><file_ext>png</file_ext><created_at>2026-10-18T17:10:14.730520+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@ftr_investors</handler><handler_name>The Future Investors</handler_name><external_id />
Microsoft has canceled an AI data center deal with Nvidia-backed Nscale in the UK. />
Debt and data centres don’t add up A growing chorus of people is asking how or when the artificial intelligence (AI) bubble will burst.
<text>
Tech critic and author Ed Zitron pointed out last week that even concerned investors love tossing around statements like “Anthropic has US$413 billion in non-cancellable compute contracts” or that “US$18 billion in Oracle data centre debt is trading at 84 cents on the dollar.”

But he notes very few people actually pause to think about what those numbers mean in the real world.

The assumption held by the bulls is that the AI boom is an unstoppable train, that OpenAI and Anthropic will seamlessly go public, grow infinitely, pull in whatever debt they want (bond yields will fall), and that every single multi-billion-dollar data centre investment will “magically” work out.

According to Zitron, however, these companies will need at least US$50 billion or more in debt every year, and they will likely be raising with low-grade junk credit ratings.
</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type The U.S. is projected to invest roughly 3.6% of GDP in AI infrastructure (think data centers etc) per annum between 2025 and 2032. That is about three times the size of the US telecom and fiber investment boom in the late 90s. And it’s roughly 50% larger than the railroad investments of the late 19th century.What do you have to believe about future cash flows if you're building data centers right now? In his new BPEA paper "Financing the AI Buildout"Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh ran the numbers for us. For US data center owners to break-even with a 10% required return, you'd have to expect that total gross revenue of data centers exceeds 9% of projected US GDP by 2032.
