Of the energy in the crude oil, only 13–21% reaches the wheels. About 17% is used up extracting, refining and transporting the fuel before it reaches the tank. The engine then turns most of the rest into heat.
<text>
An electric car on today's UK grid gets 43–45% of the primary energy to the wheels. That's with 2025's mix of gas, nuclear and biomass power stations, with all their conversion losses included. It is still two to three times better than petrol.

Run the same car on wind and solar and the figure rises to 77–80%. That includes losses in the grid and in storage.

Many scenarios assume that every unit of fossil energy needs to be replaced one for one with clean energy. It doesn't. Most fossil energy is lost as heat, so electrification cuts the energy we need, not just the emissions.

The gap also keeps widening. Every wind turbine and solar panel added to the grid moves the electric car further up the chart. A petrol car stays where it is.
</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-23T15:50:19.917134+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>electric-cars</tag><tag>energy</tag><tag>climate</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>View image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-23T15:50:21.452635+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>
