Now it has the money, but it sends much of it away. Where do European savings go?
<text><p>Across the Atlantic, into America, where they flow into US equities, Treasuries, and other financial assets—and, increasingly, into the valuations of a handful of tech giants. Those returns are difficult for American factories to match, which helps push capital toward finance and technology rather than manufacturing. Meanwhile, European plants face high energy costs, weak investment, and growing Chinese competition—all problems that more capital could help address, yet European savings continue to finance American assets. I call this “the West’s carry trade against itself”: Europe saves; America turns those savings into financial assets and inflated tech valuations; meanwhile, China builds the factories. The chart below shows twenty years of this dynamic. The rest of Big Tech is in a similar position.
<text><p>Meta spent $31.1 billion on AI infrastructure last quarter, against $31.9 billion in operating cash flow. Its free cash flow came to $784 million, down from $8.5 billion a year earlier. The rest of Big Tech is in a similar position, and the difference is increasingly being borrowed. Goldman Sachs estimates investors have put about $500 billion into AI-linked companies this year. Amazon, Alphabet Inc., Meta, Microsoft and Oracle are expected to issue more than $1 trillion in new debt over the next few years. Bain &amp; Company’s new technology report puts a figure on what that spending has to earn back: about $6 trillion in annual AI revenue by 2031. Bain thinks today's consumer and enterprise AI products could cover up to $1.8 trillion of it. The remaining $4.2 trillion would have to come from businesses that are still small or haven't been built. Bond prices have moved with that uncertainty. The $27 billion in notes funding Meta's Hyperion data center in Louisiana traded as high as 110 cents on the dollar shortly after they were sold last October, and at 91 cents on September 28. For enterprise leaders, the financing behind this spending deserves a close look. The cloud capacity companies are signing multi-year contracts for is being built partly with borrowed money, and borrowing costs have been rising. If AI revenue grows more slowly than Bain's model assumes, those carrying costs could eventually show up in cloud pricing. We went through the numbers at State of AI here: https://lnkd.in/gsJ8YpD7</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0080</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-05T04:29:53.551813+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>ai</tag><tag>big-tech</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>View image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-05T04:29:55.449224+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@RobynHD</handler><handler_name>RobynHD</handler_name><external_id />
The AI boom is tying up ever more capital. At the same time, the companies involved are closely interconnected, while financing costs are rising
<text><p>The first graphic from J.P. Morgan shows: The investment spending of Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle is approaching their operating cash flow. In the forecast shown, the combined free cash flow falls below zero in 2026 and remains negative in 2027. An operating cash flow of more than one trillion US dollars is therefore temporarily insufficient to cover the investments. The capital network shows the second side: Chip suppliers invest in AI companies, these order computing power, cloud providers buy chips. On top of that come long-term contracts, buyback commitments, and guarantees. This can accelerate the expansion. But it also makes the companies dependent on each other: If a major customer comes under pressure, multiple partners can be affected simultaneously. Important: Investments, contract commitments, and guarantees are different magnitudes. They must neither be simply added up as "debt" nor treated as revenue already received. For me, this is the crucial point: How quickly will sufficient revenue from paying customers arise from the enormous investments? The graphics do not prove an AI bubble. But they show how much future growth is already being financed and contractually anticipated.</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-04T19:42:26.295162+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>investment</tag><tag>ai</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T19:42:26.734239+00:00</created_at></media_item><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T19:42:26.776717+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@joemccann</handler><handler_name>Joe McCann</handler_name><external_id />
Goldman's heuristic is that equities can absorb a rates move until it reaches roughly two standard deviations in a month.
<text><p>We hit that level this past week.</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-04T19:09:19.481752+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>markets</tag><tag>rates</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T19:09:20.154600+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@JaguarAnalytics</handler><handler_name>JaguarAnalytics</handler_name><external_id />
Bessent, a month ago: “I am the house now”, today: “I can’t control the bond market"
<text><p>Source: Bloomberg</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-04T18:55:44.788140+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>bond-market</tag><tag>finance</tag><tag>economy</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T18:55:45.777385+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@Kalshi_Finance</handler><handler_name>Kalshi Finance</handler_name><external_id />
BREAKING: Donald Trump now owes roughly $12,000 to...
<text>BREAKING: Donald Trump now owes roughly $12,000 to every American, totaling around $3.8 TRILLION</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-04T18:47:54.912542+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>donaldtrump</tag><tag>breaking</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T18:47:55.413348+00:00</created_at></media_item><media_item>

<alt /><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-10-04T18:47:55.458704+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>https://www.linkedin.com/in/charles-henry-monchau-cfa-cmt-caia-4003096/</handler><handler_name>Charles-Henry Monchau, CFA, CMT, CAIA</handler_name><external_id />
Updated hyperscaler off-balance sheet commitments as of Sept 30: $3.6 trillion.
<text><p>That's an increase of $500 billion in ONE MONTH (mostly NVDA). Anthropic is reportedly telling IPO investors its total addressable market tops $30 trillion. SpaceX pitched $28.5 trillion. The entire US economy is about $32 trillion. TAM is the revenue you would earn if you captured 100% of a market you drew yourself. It is the easiest number in finance to inflate. History gives the warning. WeWork claimed a giant addressable market right before it imploded. The bigger the TAM slide, the bigger the red flag. Treat a TAM the size of US GDP as a sentiment signal, not a valuation input. expected at least 100 basis points of rate CUTS by June 2027.That's a +225 basis point differential in interest rate expectations in a matter of months.Meanwhile, the 10Y Note Yield is up nearly +70 basis points in 30 days with no comment from the Trump Administration. To top it all off, after a failed attempt at intervention, the US Treasury is now completely silent as long-term yields surge to their highest level since June 2002.The bond market is trading like 7%+ inflation is back and the Fed is about to start raising rates by 50 basis points at a time. This is unsustainable.</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0080</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id But there's also a ton of money being committed to AI over the next several years and even decades! Here is just one example: Anthropic. They are planning to spend more than half a trillion dollars on compute and AI infrastructure over the next 5-10 years. That's a staggering amount for a company that basically just entered the mainstream late last year / early this year. Here is where the money is committed, and the period it covers 👇 . TL;DR: - Their strategic partners, Alphabet and Amazon, are the primary beneficiaries. - SpaceX and Microsoft are also beneficiaries, but to a much smaller extent (expect those relationships to grow in the years ahead, though).- Lesser-known firms like Nscale, Fluidstack, and Nvidia-backed cloud provider Lambda have also inked huge deals totaling nearly 150bn.Remember that nine large companies (MSFT, AMZN, GOOGL, META, ORCL, NVDA, AVGO, SPCX, AMD) have about 3 trillion in commitments as well, as WSJ reported about six weeks ago.OpenAI also has ambitious spending plans, ranging anywhere from 600bn to 1.5 trillion. That's a lot of money committed for a long period of time!PS: Not an investment recommendation.✌</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-29T09:03:31.253237+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>anthropic</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type>IMAGE</media_type><file>/media/content/1896/g-20260929-antrophic-spending-plan.jpg</file><file_name>g-20260929-antrophic-spending-plan.jpg</file_name><file_ext>jpg</file_ext><created_at>2026-09-29T09:05:12.400770+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@ns123abc</handler><handler_name>NIK</handler_name><external_id />
Anthropic IPO prospectus: Valuation target: $2 TRILLION, $4.6 billion in revenue, $42 billion in net loss
<text><p>Anthropic IPO S-1 prospectus: Valuation target: $2 TRILLION &gt;$4.6 billion in revenue in 2025 &gt;$8.06 billion in operating loss &gt;$42 billion in net loss The prospectus warns that nearly 25% of revenue came from just TWO customers, and that many top enterprise clients aren't locked into long-term contracts and could cut spending or walk away anytime Anthropic plans to spend $518 BILLION on compute commitments ‘in the coming year’</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-29T09:00:51.636711+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>ipo</tag><tag>anthropic</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type>IMAGE</media_type><file>/media/content/1895/g-20260929-antrophic-cashflow.jpg</file><file_name>g-20260929-antrophic-cashflow.jpg</file_name><file_ext>jpg</file_ext><created_at>2026-09-29T09:02:58.481746+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@TheStalwart</handler><handler_name>Joe Weisenthal</handler_name><external_id />
10-year yield got over 5.22%...
<text>10-year yield got over 5.22%</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-28T11:47:11.325130+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>yield</tag><tag>finance</tag><tag>economy</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-28T11:47:12.373126+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@macropaperr</handler><handler_name>The Macro Paper</handler_name><external_id />
Japan’s 2-year bond yield just hit another 31-year high ...
<text><p>🚨 THERE IS JUST NO STOPPING JAPAN’S BOND CRISIS. I will copy and paste my explanation here: When a country’s yields go higher it means the world is losing faith it will repay its debt. Right now, Canada and Europe are selling off US bonds to minimize their risk exposure. They’re worried the USA will collapse or default. This is causing bond prices to drop, which causes yields to rise. A VERY clear message is being sent right now by our former allies. Think about it like this: if you need a car and you have good credit, a bank will give you a low interest rate on a car loan. If you have bad credit, the bank will give you a really high interest rate. Basically, risk is priced into the interest rate. It’s the same with bond yields. Make sense?</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-25T06:57:31.067702+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>bonds</tag><tag>finance</tag><tag>economy</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-25T06:57:31.275003+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@DhavalVJoshi</handler><handler_name>Dhaval Joshi</handler_name><external_id />
UPDATE: The rise in the real bond yield is now the...
<text>UPDATE: The rise in the real bond yield is now the sharpest since 2022, making it increasingly likely that stocks will feel some pain.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-25T06:47:49.154561+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>stocks</tag><tag>bond-yield</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type>IMAGE</media_type><file>/media/content/1621/image.png</file><file_name>image.png</file_name><file_ext>png</file_ext><created_at>2026-09-25T06:48:15.562697+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@ts_hodl</handler><handler_name>Trey Sellers ∞/21M</handler_name><external_id />
Shit starts breaking at 5.25%. More realistically, if current funding costs persist, refinancing 2027–36 maturities could add 1.1bn to annual interest expense, compress net margin 130bp to 25.3% and reduce EBITDA/interest coverage from 6.8x to 5.7x. THE U.S. IS TAKING A MUCH BIGGER GAMBLE WITH ITS DEBT.Wall Street’s biggest banks now expect around $1 trillion of new short-term T-bill issuance over the next year. That could push T-bills to nearly 25% of all marketable U.S. debt. The reason is simple:Long-term borrowing is expensive.10-year and 30-year yields are around 5%, so the Treasury is leaning harder on short-term debt instead. But this makes the system much more fragile.T-bills mature fast, so the government has to keep rolling huge amounts of debt over again and again. If rates stay high, refinancing costs can rise rapidly. And with U.S. debt already above $40 trillion and annual interest costs above $1 trillion, the margin for error is very little.Source: The Macro Paper</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-23T07:21:00.770987+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>economy</tag><tag>finance</tag><tag>debt</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>View image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-23T07:21:01.744782+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Soaring bond yields, gaping deficits and towering debts: what could go wrong?
<text>Soaring bond yields, gaping deficits and towering debts: what could go wrong?</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:42:29.746907+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>economics</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>The globe with a huge ball and chain attached</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:42:30.023889+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Data centres are straining the insurance market
<text>Finance & economics</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:42:13.892903+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>economics</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt /><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:42:14.855705+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
You can’t trade your way through the AI apocalypse
<text>It’s hard to price the threats posed by a misaligned superintelligence</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:41:30.278033+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>economics</tag><tag>ai</tag><tag>finance</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>A big robot about to hit a person holding a paper to sign with a hammer</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-23T06:41:31.386477+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@puckrin</handler><handler_name>Nic</handler_name><external_id />
The Yen carry trade unwind is a real risk. The BIST plunged more than 8% this week after a fund manager admitted it could not meet investor redemptions—triggering panic across the industry. Regulators have now frozen and ordered the liquidation of 131 funds worth ₺890 billion ($18.3 billion), affecting roughly 350,000 investors. Several asset managers are accused of using “Ponzi-like” tactics: buying illiquid shares in related companies, inflating valuations and attracting retail investors with seemingly extraordinary returns. When withdrawals reportedly reached $1 billion in a single day, authorities stepped in aggressively: • Margin requirements were cut from 35% to 20% • The sovereign wealth fund began buying blue-chip stocks • Two major banks were tasked with liquidating the frozen funds But intervention can stabilize prices—not validate valuations. The central question remains unanswered: What are these assets actually worth? Meanwhile, the lira is hitting record lows and Turkey’s 10-year bond yield remains above 32%. Stocks, bonds and the currency are now under pressure simultaneously. This is no longer just a market sell-off. It is a full-scale test of confidence in Turkey’s financial system.
