But it’s also to ensure the Houthis “grow even more resilient and adept in ensuring that they remain the last functional proxy by Bab al-Mandeb”, said Jalal.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-11T19:41:31.253924+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>saudi-arabia</tag><tag>houthis</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Houthi supporters carry their rifles while attending an armed tribal rally in Sanaa, Yemen, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. The statistic comes in a report released on Monday by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan government agency that provides budget-related research to the legislature. It estimated that, as of August 1, the cost of US aircraft losses during the US-Israel war on Iran was between $1.9bn and $3.3bn. The report this week highlights the growing price tag for the war, which began on February 28. A lasting ceasefire has remained out of reach as the conflict continues into its eighth month. serious sense, even if it is partially open at times, according to Abbas Khamayar, a former Iranian diplomat and professor of international affairs. “In reality, there have long been verbal skirmishes over whether this strait is open or closed,” Khamayar told Al Jazeera, saying that while the US insists the strait is operational, Iran maintains it is controlled by its armed forces and restricted to those with explicit permission. “The validity, or credibility, of these two narratives lies in the market and at petrol stations in the United States,” he argued, adding that assessments should not rest on “tweets and statements intended to manage the market or influence elections”, but on fuel supply realities. “This card remains a strategic one in Iranian hands to confront American attacks,” Khamayar said. “The Iranian account should be believed because the results are found beyond tweets.” He said Iran still bases its position on the decision that the strait will not be opened, adding that Tehran still has a great deal in this arena and will not lose what he described as a “highly important bargaining card”.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type Does claim hold weight?
<text><p>Middle East oil exports have climbed back above levels seen before the US-Israel war on Iran began in February, despite Tehran’s attempts to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and attack vessels. Michelle Brohard, head of policy and geopolitical risk at Kpler, recently said some countries could be paying Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. “I suspect there is a toll that’s being paid, which is giving these ships safe passage,” she said in an interview last week with energy analyst Rory Johnston. “I also suspect that these countries know that this is unsustainable from a perspective of [the] US escorting [ships], and also unsustainable from them paying Iran 10 percent of their cargo, or 20 percent of their cargo.” Speaking to Al Jazeera, academic Abdul Khalique said while Brohard’s speculation that a transit-fee arrangement has been put in place may be “plausible”, it is best described as an “informal security mechanism rather than a formal maritime levy”. “No public proof confirms a systematic, state-run Iranian toll system,” said Khalique, head of the Liverpool John Moores University Maritime Centre. The Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Group (PGPIG), which is also a public holding company, submitted a report to the Iranian government that said the firm has entered a phase of “surging profitability and development”. “Last year, the company’s net profit reached 187.5 trillion tomans [nearly $700m] – a 67.4 percent increase over the previous year – while production volume rose by 2 million tonnes compared to the prior year,” it said. “During the critical period marked by imposed conflict and a naval blockade, and despite numerous challenges, the holding’s trade and export operations continued around the clock,” it said. “Over the past two years, nearly $10bn in export revenue generated by the holding’s subsidiaries was repatriated to the country through the established financial and banking system.” In 2019, the US sanctioned the PGPIG for providing financial support for the economic arm of the IRGC, Iran’s elite military unit in charge of its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-05T09:15:43.654900+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>sanctions</tag><tag>oil</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
IRGC commander Ali Fadavi says Iranian forces have pushed the US military back some 1,000km (621 miles) from Iran’s borders.
<text><p>He also dismissed oil flows through the US-supervised route in the Strait of Hormuz as negligible.</p></text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0030</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-05T05:10:24.150700+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>irgc</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>iran</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Iran says oil flows through US-supervised route in Hormuz are ‘negligible’
<text>We have more from Ali Fadavi, the IRGC commander. He insisted in a televised interview that the Strait of Hormuz remained under Iran’s control and said the IRGC Navy has warned ships using the US-supervised southern route in the waterway that “their vessels may be targeted at any point”. Fadavi added that only three to four million barrels of oil per day are now moving through the route, which hugs the coast of Oman, and dismissed the amount as “negligible” when compared with pre-war traffic. He also rejected US threats of military action, saying Washington failed in Afghanistan and Iraq and will fail again. The comments came amid reports that crude oil exports from the Middle East have risen to pre-war levels, with countries exporting an average of 18.5 million bpd in the last week of September, using transits via the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, as well as exports from terminals and ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-10-05T05:02:38.008849+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>oil</tag><tag>hormuz</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name>US Senator Chris Murphy</handler_name><external_id />
US Senator Murphy says Washington should pursue a deal with Iran
<text>US Senator Chris Murphy says a deal with Iran is possible and that Washington should prioritise it over a return to military strikes. He conceded that the Iran war had its “downsides” but added that the extra defence investments will enable European countries to “take care of their backyard themselves”. “It should be us taking care of the Houthis and the Red Sea”, instead of the US, Rutte said.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-30T19:18:58.941398+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>nato</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte speaks during a joint press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026. According to the latest data from tanker-tracker websites, traffic through the key waterway has been steadily increasing, with some estimates putting oil and petroleum flow through Hormuz at nearly 80 percent of what it was before the US-Israeli war on Iran began on February 28. This could dent Iran’s leverage in reaching a favourable deal for itself in its attempts to end the fighting, which has seriously hampered its already heavily sanctioned economy, during the US blockade of Iranian ships and ports. A journey that once took a day can now take a week. The Turkish transporters’ association has confirmed that waiting times have increased sharply as more freight moves through the border. The queues reflect a wider shift in Iran’s trade. Before the war, more than 80 percent moved through its southern ports. Now, with maritime routes restricted, Tehran is turning to its land borders. The customs authority says imports through Gurbulak rose 250 percent in the five months to August. But shifting trade from sea to land creates more bottlenecks. Roads and border crossings cannot match the capacity of Iran’s ports – longer journeys mean higher costs for businesses and, ultimately, consumers. For now, the pressure is showing itself on the borders in the long lines of trucks waiting to cross.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-27T14:50:04.571867+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>border</tag><tag>trade</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Iranian army says US could attack again over its ‘precarious’ situation
<text>Army spokesman Brigadier-General Mohammad Akraminia has called the US’s current position in the Middle East “precarious”, adding it might resort to “military aggression” again because of its situation. “The army of the Islamic Republic of Iran is fully prepared to confront the enemy,” he was quoted as saying by state-run media. “I don’t think the Iranians are on the verge of surrendering, capitulating in any way,” said Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. “So we could end up with an escalation prior to the midterms. I think that’s a real possibility.”
Iran may decide “to make Trump pay for declining the proposal and the increased economic pressure the country is under”, he told Al Jazeera.
“They may decide that this is the time to escalate … just as the midterms are approaching.”
Iran’s Hormuz proposal could be seen as “kind of throwing a bone to Trump” as a potential way to get oil and gas prices down ahead of the November vote, Elmasry added.
The Republican Party is not doing well in the polls, with a number of candidates “distancing themselves” from Trump, he noted.
It’s not just the Iranians under severe economic pressure because of the US naval blockade and ongoing sanctions, “it’s also the Trump administration”, said Elmasry.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0060</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-27T09:11:58.290983+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>analysis</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
‘War is not over’ with the US, says top army general
<text>A top Iranian general says the war with the United States is now in its “critical and decisive” stage. “The war is not over, we have won, but we must consolidate this victory, and the aggressor enemy, which has suffered severe blows, must still be ready to receive severe blows from the dear Iranian soldiers,” said Amir Hatami, commander-in-chief of the army. “We are proud to be the soldiers of a country that today stands against the embodied evil of the United States and the Zionist regime and has humiliated them,” he said at a military ceremony on Sunday.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-27T09:11:26.051446+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>military</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Houthi</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-27T09:11:26.602608+00:00</created_at></media_item><media_item>

<alt>Iran’s army commander-in-chief General Amir Hatami</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-27T09:11:27.767878+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@oguzerkan</handler><handler_name>Oguz Erkan</handler_name><external_id />
Another reason why Trump easily rejects the Irania...
<text>Another reason why Trump easily rejects the Iranian proposal: Hormuz is closed, so China isn't getting cheap Iranian oil. Paul Musgrave, an associate professor of government at Georgetown University in Qatar, explained that the results would determine how much maneuvering room the White House has in negotiating with Iran. He warned that severe losses, including several Senate seats, could push the White House towards unilateral actions such as a possible resumption of warfare. Musgrave further noted that such steps might lead to escalation followed by negotiations, ensuring that the White House does not appear to be simply surrendering, or might involve drawing Democrats into the peace process, thereby complicating accountability. He also mentioned that Trump had made it clear in his UN General Assembly speech that he did not expect a deal before the midterms, while Iran’s civilian diplomats appeared to be choosing this moment to make an offer that the United States could not accept, referring to Iran’s proposal for a seven-day roadmap to end the war.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0080</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-26T11:10:22.519547+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>election</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump gestures on stage at the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas, U.S., September 10, 2026. Mehr said the region was at “one of its most sensitive security junctures”, with US military movements raising the possibility of escalation while political channels and mediation remain active. We now have remarks from the Iranian side, with a statement from Araghchi’s office stating that during the meeting the ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues. Araghchi attributed the prevailing insecurity in the region and the Strait of Hormuz to “the military aggression” by the US and Israel, with “the support and complicity of certain European nations, which has inflicted immense damage on Iran, the region, and the world”. He added that establishing lasting stability and security in the region depends on ending the [Israeli] occupation and realising the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination. The top diplomat further noted that the UK government and certain other European states must be held accountable for the role they have played in “the formation and perpetuation of an occupying, terrorist regime in West Asia”. Araghchi called for a correction of the “destructive and irresponsible” approaches adopted by some European governments regarding Iran and regional developments, emphasising that insisting on interference in the internal affairs of nations and instrumentalising human rights concepts is entirely unacceptable.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-25T11:13:45.435384+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>europe</tag><tag>middle-east</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Araghchi proposed a roadmap to US to reopen Hormuz in seven days: Media outlets
<text>Iran proposed to Washington a seven-day roadmap aimed at ending the war with the United States, according to remarks made by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to reporters from several media outlets. Iran, for its part, “keeps insisting that it wants to keep the additional power it gained during the war and that the June memorandum still is basically key to the roadmap moving forward,” said the professor, while the US “keeps basically refusing to accept this roadmap debate”. This proposal, which says the Strait of Hormuz will reopen in seven days, before presumably any Iranian assets have been returned or sanctions lifted, demonstrates that the Iranians have been willing to make a small concession, but it’s unclear whether this will be enough for the Americans. The Gulf states are key to bringing the two sides together, said Schayegh, though they will need to “consolidate their position” with respect to both countries. However, “I don’t think that, other than that, we will see movement any time soon, and definitely not before the midterms in the United States,” concluded Schayegh.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0050</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-25T09:05:59.387936+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us-diplomacy</tag><tag>strait-of-hormuz</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Analysis</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-25T09:05:59.620762+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@StealthQE4</handler><handler_name>QE Infinity</handler_name><external_id />
There’s definitely a change in tone from Iran rega...
<text>There’s definitely a change in tone from Iran regarding a deal. Wednesday marked the end of a brief wind-down period allowing countries to keep servicing Iranian airlines, leading to the cancellation of nearly all Iranian flights to Turkiye, the UAE and China. Oman, Azerbaijan and Georgia have also stopped providing airspace and airport services to Iranian carriers, while Baghdad’s airport is now off-limits to them, though flights to Najaf continue. The disruption has pushed thousands of travellers towards land crossings, with heavy congestion reported at Iran’s borders with Turkiye and along routes to Armenia. Bus tickets to Turkiye have reportedly sold for four times their normal price. Aviation expert Mohammadreza Ebrahimpour called the coordinated refusal by neighbouring countries “a new level of sanctions in action”, warning it could have longer-lasting consequences than previous measures, which had already cost Iran more than $300m a year in lost overflight payments.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0070</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-24T05:13:08.325226+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>aviation</tag><tag>sanctions</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>A banner depicting a clenched fist of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei with writing that reads in Farsi: " We must rise," and a phrase from Islam's holy book the Quran: "Stand up for the sake of Allah," at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport, Iran, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026. If you were advising Riyadh, would you pay Tehran to reopen Hormuz?</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0055</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id>1355</referenced_id><created_at>2026-09-22T05:52:20.244092+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>energy</tag><tag>gulf</tag></tags><media />

<handler /><handler_name /><external_id />
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sa...
<text>Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says the US and Israel must accept the region’s freedom from their “vile and criminal presence”.</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0040</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-22T05:05:55.637505+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>israel</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Cars pass a large billboard of Donald Trump on a building in Tehran</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-22T05:05:55.933189+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler /><handler_name>Usaid Siddiqui</handler_name><external_id />
How oil, gas losses have shrunk Iran’s GDP by 10 percent during war
<text>Amid the US-Israel war on Iran, the country’s economy has suffered a sharp contraction, with its crucial oil and gas sector taking the biggest hit as the United States tightens its economic and military pressure on Tehran. Data released by the government-administered Statistical Center of Iran showed gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 10.1 percent year-on-year between March 21 and June 20, the first quarter of the Persian calendar. The period covers the opening months of the US-Israel war on Iran, which began on February 28. The economic downturn has come as Iran struggles to export its oil, one of its most important sources of foreign currency, while also contending with high inflation, a weakening rial and disruptions to trade and industry. It’s just a matter of what the intensity of that particular action could be,” Hudisteanu said. It’s clear at this point the United States failed to “curb Iranian will” and “didn’t really get … what they want out of this particular war”, he added. Tracking data indicates “there is movement in the air” in the region, Hudisteanu told Al Jazeera. “So that is a fairly good signal that something was happening – not necessarily a campaign in preparation – but that the US is considering it’s military options.”</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0080</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-09-21T08:57:33.811204+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>iran</tag><tag>us</tag><tag>military</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>President Masoud Pezeshkian and other officials view a military-style parade in Tehran</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-09-21T08:57:35.458485+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>
