Note on data: OECD periodically revises historical data. Therefore, figures for the same year may differ from those shown in earlier versions of this chart or other publications. Countries without complete data for all three years were excluded.

NOTE: Figures represent gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) as a percentage of GDP, not total R&D spending.
</text><analysis /><region /><search_query /><result_type />
<published_at /><credits>0.0030</credits><parent_id /><referenced_id /><created_at>2026-11-02T14:28:44.509478+00:00</created_at>

<tags><tag>oecd</tag><tag>research</tag><tag>investments</tag><tag>economy</tag></tags><media><media_item>

<alt>Image</alt><media_type /><file /><file_name /><file_ext /><created_at>2026-11-02T14:28:45.996945+00:00</created_at></media_item></media>

<handler>@World_Data_A</handler><handler_name>World Data Analysis</handler_name><external_id />
The global R&D race: South Korea pulls ahead, China surges, India falls behind. R&D investment supports innovation, productivity, and technological competitiveness. China and South Korea have sharply increased their research intensity, while India's spending remains relatively low despite its growing economy.
<text>
South Korea: Nearly 5% of GDP, up from around 2% in the late 1990s. The clear leader in this comparison.

United States: Around 3.5%, with particularly strong growth since 2018.

Germany: Approximately 3.1%, maintaining a relatively stable level in recent years.

China: A remarkable rise from about 0.6% in 1996 to 2.6%.
